What could be the future strategy now that we are on the moon?

The celebration of India’s lunar success can be heard in every nook and corner of the country, which is reverberating with pride and a sense of accomplishment that “yes, we did it” and finally, India is on the moon. Everyone has a different way of celebrating this achievement, and our Bollywood has done this to an incredible extent with its epic, enduring songs about the moon. On August 23, 2023, it was revealed that India’s Chandrayaan-3 moon mission has made history by successfully completing a soft landing on the moon’s south pole and becoming the only nation to do so. People began spreading the images, jokes, memes, songs, and videos that accompanied this statement on social media. On that day, 90 out of 100 WhatsApp stories only displayed this message about successful moon mission by ISRO. Now one after one Bollywood moon songs comes to mind and like me many of us are murmuring the songs like Chand chupa badal mein, Chand ne kuch kaha, chand mera dil ho chandini ho tum or aaja sanam madhur chandini mein, khoya khoya chand, dheere dheere chal chand gagan mein like this all the iconic songs flashed in the mind for a few minutes. Of the three mission goals, both a safe, soft and gentle landing on the moon’s surface and successful rover wandering on the moon are demonstrated. The majority of the goals for scientific missions will be achieved soon as our scientists are working so hard.

S Somnath, the head of ISRO, stated that ISRO is eagerly anticipating the upcoming 13–14 days. Many intriguing new facts can be discovered. It would greatly advance India’s space industry and provide new opportunities for lunar exploration in the future. It is a major deal to touch the south pole because it is thought that water ice may be present there, which could sustain future habitation.

What might the next course of action be now that we are on the moon? I’d want to move on to the following section of my piece on a more lighter tone. For the time being, let’s set aside all the scientific discoveries, studies, and research and simply think like a layman. Next, what? Surprisingly, I came across a humorous advertisement about the travel industry taking this seriously and advertising its upcoming trip package to the moon in which travellers are pictured donning space suits and holding their trolley bags. It signifies that some ideas point to the moon habitation and short trips to the moon. Additionally, I’ve heard that some people have already purchased  lands in the moon. If we examine the situation, we will see that people anticipate to travel and to reside in the moon if required in the future. As I sipped my evening tea, I casually said my husband, “Aaao huzoor mujh ko chand sitaron pe le chalo,” in the manner of a typical housewife. He replied, “We have already spoiled this place and now that you want to spoil that heaven as well.” I briefly struggled to grasp what he was saying.

But as everything became clear, I realised that what he is saying is true to some extent. With our egotistical goals, we have already made this earth so burdensome and inconvenient. The planet is overpopulated, over polluted, and over strained in every way. There are numerous wrongdoings and problems including crime, corruption, unemployment, water scarcity, global warming and many more. So, after spoiling this earth we are all ready to spoil another heaven called moon.  After this, another weird thought came to my mind that some smart people must be planning to settle in the moon after fraud, money laundering, defaulting huge loans from bank, some people must be planning to leave this populated land and peacefully live there while some must be thinking to carry gallons of water when there will be water crisis here on the earth. So whatever the case may be, thanks to team ISRO for such tremendous success and making it possible for India. Our future is so promising, bright and we are going to achieve things that no one could have imagined in their wildest fantasies.
