The shadow army of China’s Communist rulers


Although Modi and Xi recently met on the sidelines of the Brics summit – where the two sides reportedly agreed on expeditious disengagement from the LAC standoff – it is important to remember China has employed assertive and coercive strategies in its interactions with nations that do not align with its interests.

However, a particularly influential approach has been its utilisation of united front strategy to exert influence globally. The prominence of united front work has witnessed a remarkable surge under Xi’s rule. In his 2017 address at the 19th Party Congress, Xi referred to the united front work as a “magic weapon” that is crucial for realising the “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation”. He emphasised that “forming a broad patriotic United Front is vital for the success of the mission of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).”
