Realme 12 Pro+ is the first mid-range phone to get this flagship camera feature

Realme has made its CES debut in Las Vegas and the Chinese company unveiled a mid-range phone which will up its camera game in the segment. The Realme 12 Pro+, which is expected to launch in China later this month, is set to be the first smartphone in its price segment to offer a 3x periscope zoom camera with optical stabilisation.
The upcoming smartphone is also likely to feature a relatively larger sensor that is said to improve the smartphone’s low-light performance.
According to a report by Engadget, Swiss luxury watch designer Ollivier Savéo, is behind the phone’s candybar design that includes a golden fluted bezel surrounding a polished sunburst camera module. The phone also comes with a 3D jubilee bracelet over its vegan leather back panel and is expected to be available in two different colour options — blue or white. Apart from the camera, the company is yet to unveil the phone’s pricing and other key details.
Realme 12 Pro+3x periscope zoom camera: What to expect
The periscope zoom camera here is powered by a 64MP OmniVision OV64B, which comes in at 1/2 inches large. Realme says compared to the 3x zoom camera on the iPhone 15 Pro (12MP) and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (10MP), the Realme 12 Pro+’s sensor is at least over 2.6 times as large, thus enabling over 1.8 times the amount of light it takes in.
In other words, telephoto cameras don’t get much love on mainstream flagship phones. The comparison photos we saw at the launch event were very convincing, with Realme’s preserving an impressive amount of detail even at full crop, but we’ll obviously wait for our own hands-on later.

The periscope zoom camera in the Realme 12 Pro+ is powered by a ½-inch 64MP OmniVision OV64B sensor. The company claims that this sensor is at least over 2.6 times larger compared to the 3x zoom camera on the iPhone 15 Pro (12MP) and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (10MP). This will help the Realme 12 Pro+ to take in over 1.8 times the amount of light.
The report notes that the comparison photos shown by Realme at the launch event were very “convincing”. The company was also reportedly able to maintain a good amount of detail even at full crop.
This improvement will also help the periscope camera of Realme 12 Pro+ to take better images even in low-light situations compared to conventional 3x telephoto cameras. In such situations, the latter automatically switches to its main camera ato use digital zoom instead.
Apart from this, the Realme 12 Pro+ will also pack a 1/1.56-inch 50MP Sony IMX890 primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture and optical stabilisation. This phone will also pack a 0.6x ultra-wide camera.
Realme also didn’t share which Qualcomm mid-range chipset will power the phone. However, it will be custom made to enable Realme’s “MasterShot Algorithm” computational photography capabilities. This feature will enable RAW processing which is largely exclusive to flagship smartphones.
