Helping hand for Lotus


Rajya Sabha election results are one more indicator of how hungrily BJP fights to win. And the party is aided by Congress harbouring the wrong kind of ambition

BJP’s unexpected success in Rajya Sabha polls in UP and Himachal is yet another pointer to its overwhelming hunger for success and burning ambition to dominate all available political spaces. While it obviously goofed up in Karnataka, where two of its legislators either cross-voted or abstained, in UP and Himachal it managed to garner huge support from several SP and Congress legislators, giving it two additional seats in the upper house. While the UP verdict does not indicate any political earthquake there, in Himachal it implies a threat to Congress’s govt in the near future.

Three questions | One, why can’t opposition get its act together even after seeing BJP’s drive to make its already dominant position even more unassailable? Two, is there an ambition deficit in opposition that matches Modi’s ambition surplus? And, three, is this growing BJP domination at Centre and inroads into states where it was not previously strong leading us to a one-party state?
