NEW DELHI: US President Joe Biden made a lighthearted jab at his age and former President Donald Trump at a media dinner in Washington. Biden, 81, joked, “One candidate’s too old and mentally unfit to be president. The other guy’s me.”
This quip came as Biden addressed the Gridiron Club for the first time as president, where he highlighted concerns about his age in comparison to Trump, who is 77.Biden also criticized Republicans in Congress for prioritizing an impeachment inquiry into his son’s business dealings over other pressing issues.
During the event, Biden and Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar advocated for military aid to Ukraine to combat Russia’s invasion. Biden then turned his focus back to Trump, criticizing his handling of the economy during the pandemic and referencing Trump’s suggestion of injecting bleach as a cure for COVID-19.
“Look, I wish these were jokes, but they’re not,” added Biden.
“Democracy and freedom are literally under attack. Putin’s on the march in Europe. My predecessor bows down to him and says, ‘Do whatever the hell you want.'”
Biden expressed concerns about the state of democracy, citing Putin’s actions in Europe and the Capitol assault on January 6, 2021. He reassured his commitment to upholding democracy and praised journalists as essential to a free society. The Gridiron dinner, known for its humor and camaraderie among Washington’s elite, provided a platform for Biden to address key issues facing the nation.
