CID Sleuths: CID Sleuths Swamped with Sleaze: High-Profile Sex Scandals Rock Bengaluru | Bengaluru NewsWORLD NEWS

BENGALURU: CID sleuths, the cool bunch of detectives who usually deal with challenging crimes, complicated scams and scandals, now find themselves knee-deep in a rather awkward situation. Courtesy: Back-to-back sex scandals thrown at them for investigation!
So much so that these otherwise serious-faced officers have either been binge-watching more explicit stuff than the average late-night streaming enthusiast or forcibly lending their ears to depositions that become unbearable after a certain point.
Currently, the three ‘VIP’ cases being probed by CID sleuths are: Former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna’s ‘pen drive’ saga, a Pocso case against former chief minister and octagenarian BS Yediyurappa and the sexual abuse case against sitting MLC Suraj Revanna.
TOI interacted with several CID sleuths handling the high-profile cases and the common reaction from them was: “It is sickening..we are tired.” In fact, the spotlight fell on CID when the govt ordered it to probe the pen drive scandal involving Prajwal, who has been accused of rape.
Pen drives comprising photos and sex clips were circulated in Hassan in the run-up to Lok Sabha polls and Prajwal became the talking point across the country and also abroad.
The sleuths have two tasks: First, to ascertain if the man partially seen in the sex videos is actually Prajwal. Second, to corroborate evidence with statements of the survivors.
What is bizarre is that the govt, as part of its optics, deployed more women officers to question Prajwal when he returned from his trip to Europe. Though trained to handle all sorts of situations and tackle all types of suspects, the Prajwal case turned out to be a bit weird as it involved reviewing all videos found in the pen drive.
“It was like we were on an R-rated movie marathon,” said an officer while admitting it was difficult to talk about the explicit findings with their own superiors, let alone discuss with friends and family members. “We had to show the videos and photos to the survivors while recording their statements and it was a pain for both us and them,” the officer added. TOI learnt that some officers even approached the department honchos stating they were finding it difficult to work.
While the Prajwal case is being probed, Yediyurappa’s case came into the picture. He has been charged with sexually abusing a minor girl when the latter came along with her mother seeking help in some other case. While officers do not openly confess to the political pressure being mounted on them, the Yediyurappa case has definitely added to their stress levels.
“Now the case against MLC Suraj Revanna, who is charged with sexually assaulting a male JDS worker, has been referred to us. As of now, the case is confined to audio conversations and WhatsApp chats. We are not sure what more will tumble out of the cupboard in the coming days. The fatigue factor is already kicking in,” said a CID inspector before quipping: “Thank God, the Darshan-related drama did not come to us or else we would have been dissecting personal relationships.”
A major crime, which has nothing to do with sex and which is being probed by CID, is the multi-crore Valmiki Corporation scam.
The department’s popularity has skyrocketed faster than a viral meme. “Everyone had forgotten our existence, but now people at the gram panchayat level discuss our investigations over chai,” a senior officer said.
